John Blanche : sumpmariner crewman - explorator archivists .....

  1. I was struck by a thought when you posted this image up. For many years most of the fans of the master of Blanchitsu have had to make do with fragments or little quick glimpses into his work.

But with the digital age and the better quality of print (Warhammer Visions etc) we are finally getting a clearer view.

It's akin to viewing an art print of a piece you really love and then going to a gallery to see the original work and seeing how vastly different it changes your experience of it.

For those of us that haven't had the pleasure of being able to see John's work in the flesh, it is wonderful to be able to discern the brushstrokes, the weathering and the textures he has created on all the fantastic miniatures a little clearer than days of old.

I think it's the gasmask that just hit me in this image. The colour transition, the texture, a little snapshot into the essence of what has drawn me to the works of John over the years. The bases of the Sump Hags and the Hagwyrd too have this effect on me.

Thank you for sharing these images Neil. And thank you for creating these little wonders Mr Blanche.

I'd raise a glass to you, but my pint pot o'tea will have to suffice for now.

    1. It really is my pleasure to be able to share John's work on Opus .. I myself have long admired his work ..and I created Opus half in the hopes of meeting the man himself.. now ..after meeting and gaming a few times with the living legend I presume to call him a friend.. Its a real honour and a privilege that he thinks this small sometimes difficult and temporal space is worthy of sharing a few pieces of his work.. as long as the blog is up this space will always be happy to host His work.. cheers John !

cheers Stygian ..now I want a cuppa !

  2. A very kind comment Mr Stygian - I used to blend and try and be fancy - then the hobby overtook me - now I've just succumbed to entropy inspired bi Neil's work - you just have to get you're giant sump Hoover on to this thread Neil ......

  4. Another great piece. Every time you show us something new, I feel like I need to relearn everything I'm doing. The textures you're able to achieve are humbling.

Will we be seeing the Hag's Golden Chapel sump-barge?

  5. Yup soon - the pilgrims had trouble stabilising the chapel to the sump surface and had to erect iron buttress's - litanies and hymnals are being observed ........

  6. Another wonderful piece! And a very useful proof of concept that proves that those rad carbines will look wonderful on other models as well! This may also be my favourite DV cultist head ;)

    You're spoiling us, John ;)

  7. That John can achieve so much with so little... makes one reconsider the processes by which we paint the little blighters a bit.

And the Skitari guns are going to be everywhere soon... so cool and NEW.

  8. Beautiful!

Both of the Skitarii rifles are so cool looking. And it's nice seeing how when the radioactive arc generators or whatever they are are painted like this (as just a part of the gun and not glowing) they will make for wonderful baroque but conventional autoguns, perfect for so many different uses.

  9. Hmm... my comment seems lost.

BL really should publish a tome filled with John's miniatures and some insight into how they are done.

The new crewman really is a glorious creation. Waiting for saturday and skitarii :)
